We have reviewed some great current soul/R&B albums lately, with artists such as Charles Bradley, Aloe Blacc, and Vintage Trouble giving us some retro sounds that brilliantly allude to that classic sound of yesterday while tweaking it for our time. We have to add a new artist to this list, to the list of artists who belong on the shelf—and your iPod—with Bill Withers, Al Green, and Marvin Gaye.  Michael Kiwanuka.

Home Again

Kiwanuka has one studio release, Home Again, from March 2012. It’s one hell of an album.  If it were from 1973 it would be an established classic. For a first album, this is notably coherent and confident.  All ten tunes are well composed and delivered, with no hint that this is rookie anything.  Kiwanuka’s tunes are brilliantly backed by excellent musicians and the production is light handed, letting the talent do the work.

Those of us who are familiar with Home Again are looking forward to the next release. Our four star rating is an attempt not to jinx the sophomore effort.  Hopefully when it comes out we can compare it to this one and revise the star rating to reflect what we really think.  Brilliant album, check it out.
