Dr. Dog Gets an "A" for B-Room

Dr. Dog has a new album out, B-Room, and it’s very good, certainly not B-anything; we’ll give it an “A.”  It’s odd to be able to hear their influences, artists as diverse as The Travelling Wilburys and David Bowie, and recognize they've produced an amazing and coherent album.

The Orwells: Class in 2013

The Orwells are great, new rockers, melding The Strokes with good 1960s British Invasion sounds.  They're exuberant, thoughtful, and well worth a listen.  It is such a peculiar conjunction actually, a great rock sound that’s retro while contemporary, delivering lyrics about Zoloft and other matters of the day.

An Old Camaro at a Red Light Long Ago

Picture BIC lighters held high, swaying back and forth in waves, pink and blue gel lights flashing, the guitarist pushing the gleaming guitar forward toward the crowd, riding the sustain.  That’s how the Winery Dogs should have been heard and seen, sometime in the late seventies or early eighties.

I Keep My Lid On Tightly, But Hope to Be Free...

The Good Lovelies are what we might call “American Music” or folk, but they are Canadian and they wouldn’t be exposed to such nomenclature issues if they had been lucky enough to wander onto a stage all those years ago—in, say, the 60s. Though they would be much older now, (feeble joke)—but real comment as they would be much better established.  In some ways they seem it, older and more established. This is a confident, capable band.
